Ready Steady Go

The time is now

Preparing children for a lifetime of physical activity

Why?

Only 1 out of 5 adolescents currently meet international physical activity recommendations.

Along with declining measures of aerobic fitness worrying trends indicate a steady decline in muscular fitness (i.e., muscular strength, muscular endurance, and muscular power), and physical literacy in youth worldwide.

Because a certain amount of strength is needed to move and play skilfully, weaker youth are less likely to accumulate at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Without early exposure to appropriate strength-building activities, current trends in physical activity will likely continue as weaker youth fail to gain confidence and competence in their physical abilities.

Ready, Steady, Go is an integrative framework for children that develops muscular strength, improves physical literacy, and protects against injuries.

Preparing children for a lifetime of physical activity.

Benefits

Ready, Steady, Go helps develop four key areas

Engagement

Fun and enjoyable activities improves engagement, confidence, competence, and motivation.

Activation

The progressive nature of the programme improves muscle activation and mobilisation of joints.

Movement

Over time functional power and strength increases which improves Physical Literacy

Protection

Develops the muscles, tendons, and ligaments ability to endure physical demands and forces placed on them, reducing the risk of exercise related injury.

Developing these four key areas contributes to:
  • The many health benefits of regular physical activity.
  • Building a foundation for children to engage in exercise and sport activities as they get older.
  • Improve fundamental movement skills that are the building blocks for a lifetime of physical activity
  • Reducing the risk of activity related injuries.
  • Improving mental well-being.

15 minute framework

Allow up to 15 minutes to undertake ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ activities.

Use this framework to design and deliver Ready, Steady, Go activities as part of a warm-up

Key Exercises

Build a foundation for movement skill development

The following exercises are the foundation of the coaching points consistently referred to across the Ready, Steady, Go programme.

They form the basis for good form and technique.

BE READY

The ‘Be Ready’ Stance is a balanced position when your body is positioned over your feet.

LUNGE

The Lunge develops lower body strength, muscle balance, and coordination, which is vital for running, jumping, and explosive movements.

SQUAT

The Squat develops lower body strength which is vital for running, jumping, and explosive movements.

LANDING

Landing forces are typically greater than jumping forces and are the forces that typically cause injury. Ensuring kids can tolerate landing forces, are technically proficient, and have adequate strength to maintain balance and lower body alignment is vital for explosive activities.

GO!

Speed and acceleration is one of the most important physical abilities. The basic components of efficient sprint and acceleration technique are key to success in a variety of activities.
